Senior Project 2021-2022

Project overview
Location
The project is located in Washington Township, NJ at exit 168 of the Garden State Parkway and the Washington Avenue overpass. Project will center around the intersections along the Washington Avenue overpass, as well as constructing a pedestrian structure connecting two divided sides of the town.
Problem Statement
The Township of Washington, located in Bergen County, New Jersey is divided by the Garden State Parkway that runs through the town and separates two communities on both sides. In addition, the portion of the Garden State Parkway in this town has significant traffic buildup due to the left-turn onto Washington Avenue from the GSP Exit 168 deceleration ramp. The team intends to develop a design that brings together the separated communities through implementation of pedestrian and bicyclist pathways along the Washington Avenue overpass, as well as implementing a pedestrian bridge between the hearts of two residential areas that are separated by the Garden State Parkway.

Redesign Plans
The project will include a proposed reconstruction and realignment of the deceleration ramp and exit ramp, the intersection of Jackson Avenue and Washington Avenue, and the intersection of Van Emburgh Avenue and Washington Avenue. Project will also include a structural appraisal and design for a pedestrian bridge structure, a detailed traffic analysis of the intersection, an implementation of pedestrian accommodations, plan to relocate existing utilities, and an investigation of environmental impacts.
